In the league since the first edition. Satino has entered a team in every Arumeru Youth League season Young Boys Academy has run, and we have helped build it into what it is now. Fixtures, results and the live table are kept at the home of the Arumeru League.

These are the squads that lined up for Game Week 1 on 13 September. Every matchday we fund takes all three of them to the same venue on the same bus.

How the money reaches Arusha

Money given here reaches Arusha within a day or two, and Abou spends it himself. No intermediary takes a percentage, and nothing sits in a reserve waiting on a decision.

Sinoni is not within walking distance of any of the three venues, so every matchday starts with hiring a bus and a driver. The boys also need feeding and watering after playing in the middle of the day. These are the real figures from Abou, our technical coordinator in Arusha, per team, per matchday.

Dollar figures are approximate, converted at around TZS 2,642 to the dollar. The shilling amounts are what actually gets spent. Transport is the cost every academy in this league named as the hardest one to carry.

The league

The league Young Boys Academy built

Young Boys Academy founded the Arumeru Youth League in 2024. Academies around Arusha were training their boys several times a week with almost no matches to prepare for, and YBA set out to fix that. The first editions brought in around fourteen teams from across the city.

The 4th edition has been narrowed to six academies who commit to turning up every week. YBA chose that over a bigger field with patchy attendance, after four fixtures were walked over in a previous season. Satino plays alongside Young Boys, Peace, Future Stars, Follow Your Dream and Kiytec, and we enter all three age groups at U11, U13 and U15.

The format is a double round-robin, home and away, over ten rounds with one team resting each round. That gives every side eight matches across the season. This edition also brings in relegation for the team that finishes bottom.

Why we keep entering

What the league gives our boys

Satino is free, so our players come from families who could not pay for this kind of football anywhere else. The league is what lets a free academy be a serious one. There are four things it does for our boys that we could not do on our own.

Competing at a high level

They play the strongest academies in the region every week. It is a harder test than anything we can set up in training, and it shows the boys where they really stand.

Seeing more of Northern Tanzania

Fixtures take them to Usa River, Olasiti and Kisongo. For a lot of our boys these are the first places they have travelled to outside Sinoni and Arusha town.

Friendships with other academies

They play the same clubs twice a season, home and away. The boys get to know the players they line up against, and those friendships last well past the season.

A real platform to enjoy the game

A referee, a league table, results published online, and now relegation to play for. Most of our boys came to Satino to enjoy football, and this is where they get to.

Satino has finished in the top three of the U13 competition in every edition we have entered, and our U11s came second in the first half of this year. The boys get eight or nine competitive matches a season instead of none, and it shows in how they play.

Every academy in the Arumeru Youth League carries the same transport costs we do, and the ones who cannot carry them end up forfeiting fixtures. Covering a matchday keeps our three teams in the league, and keeps the competition worth playing for the other five academies too.
